Credit Card Guidelines For The Average Joe

It has become painfully clear that the basics of responsible credit card usage have been lost on some people. These little rectangles of plastic are not a free pass to live it up well beyond your means. Without knowing it, you can pay far more for some items than you ever intend to. There are some simple guidelines that you can follow to try and steer clear of certain financial danger.

There are some people who are able to successfully use their credit cards just as they would use cash. They use it to pay their rent, their gym membership, even their personal trainer. This sounds easy, but this means keeping careful track of everything you spend and making sure that you are setting aside as you go along the amount of money needed to pay the bill in full when you receive it.

You must be able to exercise some will power. Having the little plastic wonder does not mean that you can go spending without a care. You need to know your personal limits based on what you can afford on what you make. If you cannot afford the trip to the golf resort, for instance, do not go. The cheap golf outing is more enjoyable anyway.

Hobbies and other leisure activities can cost a lot of money. Just because you have put yourself on a budget does not mean that you are unable to enjoy them anymore. If you’re a skier, for example, there are affordable ways to get your hands on alpine skiing equipment. You do not have to shop in the specialty stores all the time.

You will be surprised at how much cheaper things are when you are not paying interest charges on them. For a big-ticket item, instead of financing the purchase with plastic, you can set money aside for it every week until you are able to get it. It is amazing what you will be saving in interest charges.

Make a positive change in your finances. Instead of paying your card company interest every month, pay in full and take what you would have paid in interest and set it aside in an account that earns interest for you. Use what you have learned to put yourself ahead.

When you try it all you may realize that all you need is an emergency-only card. Just remember that a pedicure is not an emergency. A trip to the emergency room is. Make sure that you keep something back to be able to cover the unexpected details of life.
